Kent Howie moved to San Francisco from Calgary, Alberta in August of 1985 to attend the San Francisco Art Institute. After graduating Summa Cum Laude with an MFA in Photography, in 1989 he joined Artists Television Access, an all volunteer artists run community space on Valencia Street in the Mission District. He was the longest serving member, both as staff performing daily tasks, and later as a board member, shaping the direction of the organization.
During his tenure at ATA, Kent worked with the Arab Film Festival, the Latino Film Festival, and the South Asian Film Festival. Kent revived and was the long time manager and curator of ATA’s art gallery. In addition, Kent produced over 500 episodes of Artist’s Television shows that aired on Public Access Television.
Before working with the Inland Boatman’s Union as a deckhand for over 19 years, Kent worked for 5 years at Project Open Hand, delivering food to terminally ill patients across San Francisco. In 2008, Kent was an integral part of a community effort that organized and blocked chain stores from coming into the Mission District.
I’ll live my life and just experiment.
So that’s it for now.
